Dr. Mark Nigrini, Professor, West Virginia University

Mark Nigrini is on the faculty at West Virginia University. He is the author of "Forensic Analytics and Benford's Law." In 2014 Nigrini published an article in the Journal of Accountancy that was co-authored with Nathan Mueller, who at the time was incarcerated in a federal prison. That article later won the Lawler award. His work has been featured in national media and he has published papers in accounting, scientific and pure mathematics journals, and professional publications. His radio interviews have included the BBC in London. He is a regular highly rated presenter at the ACFE’s conferences. He has run forensic analytics tests for various organizations and currently works with internal audit at WVU on the audit of the university’s Purchasing Card transactions.

Detecting P-Card Fraud, Errors, Waste and Abuse Using Forensic Analytics

An NAPCP poll found that transaction audit rates were anywhere from zero to 100%, with the rationale for the low audit rates being a lack of resources. One manager stated that their company identified and focused on the risky transactions first. This workshop will demonstrate a structured way of identifying and selecting the higher-risk transactions for audit. The main steps in the process are data collection, data preparation, data analysis and reporting. This sample selection method is known as the Nigrini Cycle.

The workshop will include a review of some actual fraud and abuse cases in a way that this fraud awareness can be presented again by participants in their own companies. The workshop will include hands-on time where you can analyze your own data, or an instructor-provided transactions table of authentic P-Card data. The instructor will provide customized Excel-based templates that can be used on your own data.

Workshop Topics and Objectives

The workshop’s topics and objectives will include:

  • reviewing several informative and interesting cases of fraud, waste and abuse
  • evaluating the results of two prior applications of the Nigrini Cycle to P-Card data
  • understanding the contents of the Excel-based software
  • running the tests on your own data, or on a data set provided by the instructor
  • analyzing the results of the high-level and drill-down tests
  • organizing the results into a value-added management report
