Interchange Rates

Each year, typically semi-annually in April and October, MasterCard and Visa revise their respective interchange rate schedules, which address all types of cards (consumer and commercial) and vary by country.

American Express

  • Competitive rates available to merchants for card acceptance are based on business operations and transaction patterns and are confidential between American Express and the merchant.
Commercial Card Types  United States Commercial Card rates include these card types:
  • Business: Normally used by small- to medium-sized businesses to keep business expenses separate from personal finances
  • Corporate: For travel and entertainment (T&E) expenses
  • Purchase/Purchasing: For a variety of business expenses (goods and services)
  • Fleet: For vehicle fuel, parts and maintenance expenses
  • Government Services Administration (GSA): Cards used to manage government T&E, fleet, and other business expenses (goods, services, petty cash)

 Visa Canada

Bank Identification Numbers

Commercial Card interchange rates are often tied to a card's bank identification number (BIN), also known as issuer identification number (IIN), which is the first six digits of the card number. In many instances, the BIN/IIN also identifies the type of card product.
