CPCP Exam Appointment and Preparation

Scheduling Your Exam and Preparing

You need to receive a Scheduling Authorization before you can schedule your exam. While waiting for this notice, review information about the exam and create a study plan.

How to Schedule Your Exam Appointment

To schedule your exam:

  1. Wait for a Scheduling Authorization from the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC).
  2. Read the instructions provided on the Scheduling Authorization.
  3. Schedule your exam with PSI Testing Centers for any available date and time during the designated two-week testing window.

For more information, including how to change your exam appointment if necessary, refer to the Handbook for Candidates and review the related FAQs.

About the Exam

The proctored, computer-based CPCP exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions on multiple topics. You will be given three hours to complete the exam. It is a blend of art and science, testing an individual's:

  • ability to recognize proven methods for effective P-Card program implementation and management (e.g., industry best practices), taking into account the big picture impact on an organization
  • understanding of industry products, processes, players and regulations

You do not need to memorize a list of specific industry statistics; rather, have a broad understanding of the industry overall.

Overview of Suggested Exam Preparation Process

Even if you have many years' experience in the P‑Card industry, it is possible that you do not have expertise in all subject areas. The certification examination tests on a broad understanding of the P‑Card industry. The following is a suggested course of action for exam preparation:

  1. Review the exam content outline.
  2. Take a practice quiz.
  3. Identify your areas of weakness and obtain resources; consider those listed on the reading references list.
  4. Evaluate your overall experience.
  5. Create a study plan.
  6. Locate the testing center before your test date and plan ahead.
  7. Utilize test-taking tips.

Exam Results

An unofficial pass/fail result will be provided at the testing center in June and October. Once the two-week window of testing is completed, the results must be tabulated and validated before the official examination results are released to the candidates. The passing score, which is set using recognized psychometric methods, represents the number of test items a candidate must answer correctly to be considered as having minimal basic knowledge of the Purchasing Card profession.

PTC will mail results to candidates within six weeks after the two-week testing window has closed. Review more FAQs about the exam results, including next steps regarding passing or failing the exam.

Please note: There are steps you should take soon after earning the credential.
