In P-Card Programs, Over-Control Means Under-Utilization and Reduced Process Savings

Organizations today may be over-controlling their Purchasing Card programs to the point of under-utilization and at the detriment of process savings. NAPCP Annual Conference speakers, demonstrators, exhibitors and the industry’s leading providers discuss best practices for finding the right balance.

March 26, 2012—Industry studies have repeatedly demonstrated that Purchasing Card (P-Card) fraud/misuse is not the epidemic problem that some believe it to be. Yet, some end-user organizations go overboard, front-loading so many restrictions that cardholders become frustrated and revert to costly, traditional purchase-to-pay processes.

How can the Commercial Card and payment industry reverse the propensity to over-control a program? Education. "The NAPCP understands that well-informed practitioners, management and auditors collectively help an organization develop an effective control environment that supports program optimization," says the NAPCP’s Lynn Larson, manager of education. "P-Cards offer protections (e.g., liability waiver insurance, chargeback rights, dispute process, etc.) that most payment methods do not. Through a balanced mix of systemic and detective controls and a targeted audit program, an organization can encourage usage and maximize the value proposition inherent in P-Card programs."

Educational offerings on P-Card controls and auditing measures are always popular.
