Ban Lifted: Visa Canada Card Acceptance at Walmart

As of January 6, 2017, Visa cardholders may now use their cards at Walmart.

Walmart threatened to ban all Visa cards to be used at their 409 stores across Canada because of high transaction rates last June. Walmart stopped accepting Visa at three Thunder Bay stores in July and three months later stopped accepting at sixteen stores in Manitoba.

Visa Canada released this statement in September.

"Walmart's decision to further limit Visa acceptance in Manitoba is disappointing. We know from our experience in Thunder Bay that consumers want the option to use the payment method of their choice when shopping - including at Walmart stores. Visa remains committed to actively working with Walmart so that Canadians can use their Visa cards wherever they wish to shop."

Although we do not know the details of the agreement between Walmart and Visa, cardholders can begin using their Visa branded cards today.
