A Global Organization is Born, and Flourishes

The story of the NAPCP is a classic grassroots tale of taking
an idea, and turning it into a legacy.

Diane McGuire & Laura Flandrick, 2014

Twenty years ago, two P-Card managers at Cargill, a global agricultural commodities corporation, took everything they knew from their award-winning program, and launched the NAPCP. Laura Flandrick, CPCP, and Diane McGuire, MBA, CPCP, knew they had found a void in the industry, but more importantly, they knew they could fill it. Professionals like themselves were seeking education, tools, resources and networking opportunities to grow their programs, learn from their peers, align themselves with trends, and take advantage of emerging technologies and new products and services. While many of those resources existed, there was no conduit to pass them into the hands of the people who needed them. Diane and Laura took this singular vision into their basement offices, and began.

of the NAPCP in the video below

In the original introductory message to the industry, Laura and Diane wrote: "The NAPCP will provide a forum to guide, educate, and support Purchasing Card professionals. The synergies created will result in a more robust product and effective application of the product. As a member of the NAPCP you will be able to network with the entire Purchasing Card community, receive the latest news on products and services, and have an impact on the industry.”

Nothing, and everything, has changed since then.

We’ve lived through major payments innovation, a historical financial crisis, unprecedented globalization, social media evolution, intricate domestic and global regulation, and data and artificial intelligence domination. Through it all, we continue to do what we have always done: bring you up-to-date and timely support in the form of new research, resources, and events. We provide fresh tactics, innovation, and philosophies to help you maximize your programs and navigate the ever-changing payments landscape. And most importantly, we’ve created a vibrant community—both face-to-face and virtually—where you can release your inner card and payment geek and collaborate with like minds. And as everything about the industry has changed around you, we have not only kept pace, but we have met your needs before you even anticipated them.

Over the course of two decades, the payments industry has transformed in ways we couldn’t even imagine in 1999. P-Cards have evolved into an entire suite of Commercial Card and Payment products. Automation has transformed our industry in the areas of reconciliation, auditing, reporting and benchmarking capabilities. Mobile applications have shrunk our world, while opening up even more capabilities. The next 20 years will bring even more revolutionary innovations.

The NAPCP is now the world’s leading Commercial Card and Payment professional association, serving an industry community of more than 20,000. Our presence is global, and we serve industry professionals in 78 countries. Our website, at 2,000 pages strong and growing, is the largest repository of Commercial Card and Payments educational products, tools and interactive learning and networking opportunities. From our first white paper, Purchasing Card Best Practices, to our most recent, Optimizing Revenue Sharing: Insights on What Drives Your Rebate, we have provided hundreds of reports, surveys, studies, polls, samples, webinars and more, dedicated to every imaginable topic in the industry.

We don't do all of this alone. Our end-user community has generously shared its vast, collective knowledge. All of you have been in the same place at some point in your careers, and the successes and lessons-learned that you share are examples of the peer-to-peer learning the NAPCP facilitates. In addition, during the last two decades, we have had nearly 50 Year-Round Partner Sponsors--the industry's thought leaders who provide the products, services and technologies that fuel Commercial Card and Payment programs.

We invite you to use this milestone anniversary to leverage all the resources we have to offer. Take advantage of your membership to access all our website content. If you are not a member, consider joining today. We have not increased our membership fee in ten years, but have exponentially increased and expanded our services to you. You can pay for your membership by moving less than eight transactions to a Commercial Card.

As we celebrate this milestone and all of our accomplishments, we thank you, our community, for helping us build a vital, forward-thinking organization. You are all an integral part of where we’ve been, and where we're going. Enjoy the timeline of our history to the right, and take a peek into our archives, below.
