Workshop, Breakout and Demo Sessions for the NAPCP Canadian Commercial Card and Payment Conference

About the Conference Agenda Sessions
Venue Speakers Exhibit Hall, Demos and Sponsors

The 2017 Canadian Commercial Card and Payment Conference will feature four different types of sessions. General Sessions will bring all conference attendees together to kick off each day. Breakout Sessions are "traditional" sessions that feature speaker-led presentations followed by time for questions and answers. Provider Breakout or Demonstration Sessions are offered by industry providers eager to showcase their knowledge and products to current and prospective clients. And Roundtable Discussion Sessions are less presentation-based and more geared toward the sharing of ideas and insight.

Day One General Session:

A Review of the 2017 Purchasing Card Benchmark Survey Results with Emphasis
on the Canadian Response

Presented by: Dr. Mahendra Gupta
, the Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Professor of Accounting and Management, Olin Business School, Washington University

Professor Gupta summarizes key findings from the 2017 Purchasing Card Benchmark Survey of P-Card use in North America. The focus of the presentation will be on market trends and current “best practice” use of Purchasing Cards and card program management activities, with an emphasis on underexploited action items associated with areas of growth opportunity. Professor Gupta will also provide unique survey insights into the Canadian experience with Purchasing Cards.

This interactive presentation will teach participants about the powerful research behind mindful practices, the benefits they can receive, and tangible takeaways to practice better focus in your workspace. Participants will feel empowered to reduce workday stress, increase energy and positivity, and become more efficient with their time. Trish will share the transformative benefits of simple mindful practice: from being more focused and efficient in our work and kinder in our relationships, to experiencing less stress and burnout on a daily basis.

Automating Your P-Card Platform 
Presented by: Ronda Davis, CPCP, Business Data Analyst, SCI

One of the biggest and most common mistakes in P-Card auditing is having too many manual processes. This problem only grows bigger as an organization begins looking at expansion efforts and transaction volume increases. Automating your P-Card auditing process not only tackles that specific challenge, it also can enhance spend visibility, increase productivity and strengthen program controls.

Building a Better Travel Expense Program

Join Lezly as she discusses how she grew her P-Card program at Waterloo Catholic District School Board, by evaluating the culture of her organization and identifying and selecting the right payment method for program optimization.

Presented by: Katie Beatty, Community Engagement Specialist, NAPCP

Whether you are new to P-Cards or are looking to rebuild the foundation of your existing program, this session will cover the P-Card Basics that you need to know in order to implement a sound, sturdy and effective P-Card program. We will look at program logistics, learn how to establish effective strategies and polices, develop a plan for expansion and optimization and learn how to implement and manage a program you and your organization can be proud of.

Attendees will leave with the knowledge of being able to:

Picking Up the Check: Identifying Opportunities in Payables

Presented by: Lilia Tanjuakio, MBA, Director, Finance, Deloitte

Payments professionals are becoming increasingly creative as departments usher in new technologies to streamline processes and maximize the value of their card programs. Deloitte used creative approaches to transition into programs that have allowed for greater card spend, increased compliance, control and maximum spend visibility.

By adopting internal systems and expense management tools, Deloitte is able to continuously identify new opportunities, achieve unprecedented success in areas such as travel and entertainment (T&E) and focus on forward-looking initiatives.

The key to Deloitte’s success has been its unique approach to identifying opportunities within payables. Through a combination of creative thinking and automation, the Firm has increased controls, transparency, compliance and card spend. Lilia will discuss:

  • creative ways to increase card spend to maximize program rewards and reimbursements

Revamping Your P-Card Program to Improve Compliance and Reduce Risk

Presented by: Rita Orsatti, Accounts Payable Manager, Sinai Health System, Mount Sinai Hospital

Compliance, controls, communication and codes are typically deemed “scary” words in the Commercial Card industry, but not anymore! Over the past few years, Mount Sinai Hospital has revamped its mature P-Card program turning those “scary” words into helpful tools that helped them gain 99 percent compliance from their cardholders by using the 5 “R’s.”

Attendees will leave with knowledge to:

  1. analyze current data to create realistic profiles based on organizational activity and cardholder spend history
  2. create a solid communication strategy based off of cardholder profiles and considering corporate culture
  3. audit effectively by using reports to strategically highlight potential policy violations
  4. create infraction codes when auditing expense statements to capture data used to spot and correct cardholder mistakes
  5. use all of the above to evolve your program and be sure to revisit on an ongoing basis to ensure your program continues to balance improving compliance with satisfying business needs
